Hočąk Text — Rich Man, Boy, and Horse

narrated by Philip Longtail (Sįčserečka), Buffalo Clan

Interlinear Hočąk-English Text

by Rev. James Owen Dorsey

English Translation

The text was written on unsuitable paper which acted rather like a blatter. Since the Hočąk part of the text is typed, it is little effected; but the interlinear English translation was written by hand in ink below each Hočąk line, and the ink soaked into the paper to such an extent that a couple of the pages are particularly hard to read. Nevertheless, this was the last of the Dorsey texts that I have transcribed, and at this time I have accumulated a worlist of sufficient scope to confirm the great majority of difficult readings. Consequently, this text is essentially complete. Where readings have remained obscure, I have inserted notes to to that effect.

Dorsey's orthography has been changed to the contemporary IPA standard. Notes by the editor (Richard Dieterle) are indicated by "—RD." Question marks in parentheses, sic (?), are those of Dorsey, all others mark uncertain readings.
