He hit himself on his chest. He coughed a little and then he knocked out a gray-backed black hawk. Then light sparkled across its back. That one reposed. ...

(202) Hare said to his friend Turtle, "My friend, was there not something that Earthmaker let you bring?" "Friend, you speak the truth," Turtle said. "I still have what Earthmaker sent," he said, and he did it. He struck himself on his chest. Then he knocked out a black hawk with sharp wings. He made it appear full round with Light and Life.¹

Commentary. "black hawk" — symbolic for the shell that is shot at the initiate.² The shell is either shot from the mouth of the master, or it is launched from a medicine bag, usually formed from the body of an otter. Being shot by this shell causes the initiate to fall into a symbolic death. The shell is said to mystically lodge itself in the heart. It is homologized into a black hawk, the most agile of all predatory birds, since it flies through the air and strikes its target with lethal effect.
